Kate Chopin....Story of an Hour

http://www.vcu.edu/engweb/webtexts/hour/

This is the link to Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin.

1. After reading this short story.....You are to write an analysis about the story. It should be colored with details and proof!!!

2. Next, I want you to write a character diary. Choose a character and write from the perspective of that character based on the events in the story.

I have some questions below:

I've written the questions as they'd be read by the character that the student chooses; so the word "you" refers to the character

What are you most afraid of or worried about? What is making you anxious? Describe the person, object, or event that bothers you. Talk about specifically what concerns you -- Why are you worried? What's the worst thing that could happen? What do you hope will occur? How do your fears or worries relate to the things that have happened so far?

Who has impressed, annoyed, or pleased you most so far? What other character has had the strongest effect on you? Who is the other character? Describe the interaction you've had, and why you feel the way that you do? How have the other character's actions influenced the way that you feel?

When you grow up, what do you want to do or be? What are your aspirations? What job do you want to have? When you dream about the future, what do you think about? What do you dream that you will be? How does what you want to do relate to who you are now?
OR if you're character is already grown up, What do you want to accomplish in your life? What big goals have you set for yourself, and why? When you daydream about what you might be or do in your life, what do you dream about? What are you doing? And how do your dreams relate to who you are now?

What is your biggest accomplishment so far? What have you done that has made you proud of yourself? Describe what you've done, how it made you feel, and why you think it was so important -- what makes it your biggest accomplishment? When you think about your accomplishment, how does it make you feel about the future? How would you complete a sentence such as this: when I think about this great accomplishment, I only hope that in the future, I'll be able to __________.

If you could relive a moment, what moment would you like to relive, and why? What event do you think about? Why is it such a strong memory for you? Why is it stuck in your thoughts? If you revisited this event, would you change it? Would you do anything differently? Would you try to notice something in particular? Would you want to relive it exactly as it occurred the first time? Describe the event in a way that makes your interest in reliving it clear.

What has made you happy recently? Describe the event, object, or person who has brought you happiness, and explore why you felt happy. Reflect on the event, object, or person -- look back and think about exactly the way that you felt. What does your happiness tell you about who you are and how your mind works?

Sketch your house, yard, office, or another important space that you know well. Label all your special things and the specific places. Once you've sketched things out, write a description about the place that explains why it's important to you. What makes the place significant? Why do you remember it? How does the place make you feel, and why? How does it relate to who you are -- is it messy, neat, clean, and so forth? What qualities does the place have, and how do those qualities relate to what you want in life?

What lesson(s) have you learned? What have the events that you've been through taught you? Think of them as a sort of fable -- what would the moral be? Describe the events in a way that makes the lesson that you've learned clear. Once you've described the lesson, talk about why it is an important lesson and how you think that it will affect you in the future.

Describe your dream room or getaway. If you could escape, where would you go? What would you do? Use details to describe your getaway -- what does it look like? what sounds do you hear? what do you smell? How does your dream place relate to the places that you live in and visit now? Reflect on why you would want to escape to this place -- Why is it better than where you are now? Why this place instead of another?

Choose a value or ideal that is important to you -- honesty, courage, faithfulness, and so forth. Define your value, and explore how it relates to your life. Why is this ideal important to you? What events, objects, or people have brought this word to mind? And what makes it more than just a word? What makes it an important value or ideal? Describe the events in your life that make this an important value, and explore how and why the ideal has grown so important to you.

  1. the story tell us about how when we wish for bad things to happened to other people, sometimes they end up happening to you. The woman in the story should have felt sad instead of happiness when she heard the news about her husband's death. For me, this kind of people are more common than ,we think. For example here in P.R. you hear this kind of stories almost every day. recently we had this case when this mom killed her owns children because she was mad with her partner and wanted to punish him. This is a good lesson for us and we need to understand that how powerful our thoughts are.

  3. I'm going to make a diary of Mrs mallard , From my perspective she had more than a reason to act like that. Maybe after so many years into the marriage she was tired, upset, and sick of been with that guy.She was the lady of the house so she had to behave, repress herself turning the love she once felt into a mix of anger and hate. The second reason is the opposite maybe she was so in love with him but at the same time she was doubting her feelings for him and something inside of her reacted toward that part of her that wanted to be free. The end is really complicated because the reader could interpret it many ways. the first one she died because of joy ,because she was happy that her husband die and she was free and the other one is that the emotion of knowing that her husband was alive and she was really happy for it. The main character, Mrs. Mallard is a woman who became insane because of being contained by her husband for a long time. In the end, Mrs. Mallard hears a rumor that her husband was hit by a car. The normal response from a regular person would be, Oh my gosh! But instead, Mrs. Mallard screams in joy. This was ironic because as soon as she thought that her husband died, she rejoiced. But soon, her husband appears in the front door. It was all just a rumor. He was still alive. And so, Mrs. Mallard ended up dying of a heart attack out of excitement. Its ironic how the other person dies instead

Mrs.Mallard diary- I don’t think Louise was necessarily happy that her husband died. At the beginning of the story after she learned of his death it says, “She wept at once with sudden, and wild, abandonment in her sister’s arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself, she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.” That doesn’t mean I am happy that my husband died, in my opinion. I think she went into her room not knowing what to feel after she heard the news. While she was in there “soaking in” her environment she began to realize certain things. One monumental thing was that life was moving on despite her husband’s death. When I say that, I am referring to the mentioning of “the new spring life, the delicious breath of rain, the street caller, the open window, the open square.” Ultimately she decided to view her husband’s death as an opportunity to become a part of that life in ways that she never had before. At the end her husband did not die. I think the irony of the ending is what ties the story up so well. She didn’t have a heart attack when she heard of his death, she had one when she saw him alive. The narrator wants the reader to believe that she died of disappointment at seeing her husband alive. I also don’t think she died of joy either. It’s obvious that the narrator believes that the other characters thought she died of the “joy that kills.” Chopin does an excellent job at convincing the reader that the other characters were clueless. She died of shock. Can you imagine finding out that your housband is dead, and accepting it one way or the other, and then seeing that they are actually alive? No matter what your feelings are for them, it's going to affect you tremendously. Unfortunately, Louise’s heart could not handle the shock.

This story is profound with whole feelings and pure heart devotion. The characters are all in a stage of sadness and preoccupation. It is amazing how an event like this could turn out to be better in a way and worst in another. Mrs. Mallard was going thru one of the worst feelings in the world, she just lost somebody. The death of a person is a risky feeling since each one interprets it on a different way. But what happened to Mrs. Mallard was just odd and weird. The story shows how deep a person can love and how bad news can affect them. It is how things can change depending on how you decide to interpret them on you brain. Mrs. Mallard decided to look on an strange positive way, the death of her husband, but that decision costed her own life. It is amazing to see how the mind can control our fate depending on what we put and believe in.

My name is Josephine Mallard. I've never been so close to my sister, Louise Mallard, until that day came. The day I heard one of the saddest news in my life. My brother-in-law was dead, the man my sister loved with everything she had. The news came to me first, just because everyone knew my sister had a heart problem. The job was on me, I had to tell her what happened. I remember that day when I reached onto her and grabbed her hand. Words couldn't almost reach to complete sentences, but after a long conversation I told her. I can remember the look on her eyes when the news stuck her mind. She was in a sort of shock, but yet she said nothing. Then, in just a few seconds her eyes began to flood, she hugged me as never before and started crying her feelings out. Minutes passed and she calmed herself. Then she decided to go to her room, just to sit at her chair and look out the window. I decided to let her go, I thought time alone for herself would be the best in this time. Minutes passed, hours passed and she was still there. I got preoccupied and decided to go to her room, to be with her. I got closed to her door and tried to open it, it was locked. Then I putted my ear closed to the door and herd strange words. She was constantly repeating: "Free, body and soul free". This got me scared and I yelled to her so she would open the door for me. She didn't so I told her: "Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door--you will make yourself ill. What are you doing, Louise? For heaven's sake open the door." She stopped saying the words for a moment and told me to go away, saying that she was not making herself ill. I knew something was wrong, and I was concerned about her heart problem. Then the door was opened and I saw one of the strangest look on my sister's eyes. She was calmed, in a way happy. I could not believe this, but I preferred not to ask. She grabbed my waist and together we descended to the door, so we could assist my brother-in-law funeral. In a flash of time I felt my sister being heavier. It was like she was trying to make me carry herself. It was strange, but I thought it was normal because of her situation. But then I saw her face, pale with a sort of smile looking. The weight was too much and I collapsed in the floor with my sister. After a few seconds of calling her I realized her chest was not moving. She was not breathing and not moving either. I started to cry myself out and a few minutes later my husband entered the house and found me like that. He called the doctor and when he came he told us what happened. "I've decided that she died of heart disease, but of the joy that kills." said the doctor. I didn't understood, but I realized that her mind and body decided to die first than live without her true love.

The t narrator of “Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin immediately tells the reader that the main character, Mrs. Mallard and suffers from heart trouble, and revealing to her that her husband has died will have to be done extreme caution because of her hart condition. Her sister, Josephine is the one how is going to tell her, and Richard (her housben freind) stands by as he was the one who double-checked and made certain that Mr. Mallard’s name, Brently, was on the list of those killed in the railroad accident.
This was a common , to not be sure in someones death in the 1800 since there was no Facebook or anything like that. Mrs. Mallard “hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance” but instead she wails with “wild abandonment” and steals away to be alone in her room, shunning her sister and slumping into one of her armchairs in a state of shock. The author is making a different on how the main character reacts.
Mrs. Mallard Close herself in her room, she started watching how life went by. She started feeling a different thing that she had thing that she had never felt. A sort of freedom that she had never felt. She was going thru all her emotions when suddenly her sister told her to come out. She came out, and her husband was there. The story concludes telling how she died. In my conclusion she did not what to see he husband dead

I am Josephine Mallard and was really close to my sister until a tragedy happened. It was told that her husband had died In a railroad accident. She looked sad for what happened, but she look has she was forcing her tears. I knew my sister dint love her husband since she knew of the affairs I had had with him. He was my love, I was he's true love, we had the most romantic affair you could imagine. My sister was faking her sorrows just to show she supposedly loved him. When we saw that he was alive I was the one who was happy, She became so sad she died of a heart attack.

I mean who cheats with the husband of your sister, and she thinks I don’t know oh well I guess I will die with it. Oh wait I am already dead up’s.

Uhhh... Well, this was a disappointing story. Why would you do something so horrible to a person! First they go like: "oh, yeah he is dead." Next thing you know he comes in through the door. Terrible! Okay, it's not her sister's fault he is not dead, but they would've at least verified once more to see if it was true that he had died. Poor lady, she was all happy and exited to be free and all her dreams crashed on the shore. I don't get something, why did she died of joy if she just saw her husband come in through the door???? I would've died of anger, and disappointment.

    Diary of Brently Mallard:

Dear Diary: I had always been a good husband to my wife; although I mistreat her sometimes, she had to learn that I was the head of this house and what I said was to be done. She was a good wife, but I was not to show too much sympathy because it is not a common thing to do with your wife now days. If I did, my friends would say that she dominated me. When I came from work today, my wife was laying dead on her sister's arms. When we called the doctors they said she died of a heart condition. I think she died of sadness, for my friend and her sister thought I had died on an accident that had occurred earlier this day. Oh well, what can I do about it now. I'll have to look for another wife who can take care of me.

This story in my opinion was kinda funny. I mean like its messed up how her husband treated her and stuff but u shouldnt count your apples before the harvest (or however that saying goes) she should've made sure that her husband was dead...i mean i know it was a simple mistake but still and i think its kind of idiotic how she died at the end...like..did she catch a heart attack or something...you dont just die randomly like that

    Dear Diary,
People dont understand, no one understands what it was like to live under the oppressing hand of my husband and now that he is dead i am relieved. Ok it may seem a little cruel that i am over filled with joy, but he made my life so impossible. Now i can finally live in peace and enjoy what little life i have left. I must act like i am sad for a while though or someone will start to suspect something. Oh how great a day today will be.

Today we finally did it. Louise is finally gone. Brently's plan worked. I didn't think it would but it did. He told me at the accident today that this would do it. There was a horrible accident with many dead. I was told to tell Josephine to tell her that Brently was dead. I even went over to try to console and help sell the story. She was all lockedup in her room crying or whatever while her sister was trying to get her out. That's when Brently came home. I saw him outside waiting for the signal from me when she would leave her room. When she came down the steps I thought she was going to come after Brently. So, I stepped in front of him to shield the view. However instead she dropped dead. Brently told me he would wait a few weeks before he sold the house and finally run off with Josephine. The scandal would be all the papers especially if they found out she was pregnant now. Oh well, I gotta go boy do I feel tired. Crazy day.
